Recap of Philippians Parts 1–8

- First let’s look at the verse and you tell me what the problem is with it?
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me —Phil 4:13
1. The Problem: Blank cheque?
- Seems too good to be true—a blank cheque!
- Are there any limitations or qualifications? —What is the scope of “all things” ?
- We kind of know it doesn’t include everything
- I want to win the lottery
- Fly like a bird
- I want to get 100% perfect grade in all my exams
- I want to be married to the perfect spouse within the next year
- Story of my broken phone: “Be repaired!”
- Paul: I want to get out of prison right now, and have a full pardon!
- Jesus: “Give Peter the faith, right now, so that he will never deny me”
Philippians 4
- I rejoiced in the Lord greatly because your care for me has blossomed once again.
- (You were always concerned, but lacked opportunity.)
- I am not saying this out of need,
- I have learned in whatever circumstances to be content.
- So I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound.
- In everything and all things I have learned the secret
- of being well fed or hungry,
- having abundance or shortage.
- I have strength for all things in him [Christ] who strengthens me.
“All things”
- =“whatever God wants me to do”
- This is not limited to “spiritual” things!
- That’s the “What” but there is also the How?
- If you get it, then it will change your life
2. The Passage
2 Corinthians 12
- But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,
for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses,
so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
Verse 13
literally:
All things I have strength for,
in him who strengthens me.
- πάντα ἰσχύω ἐν τῷ ἐνδυναμοῦντί με
- Sentence order why? —”Wednesday I’m going out for coffee”
- “in him” —going to be important
- “Christ” —implied —often put in to make it read better
- The “can do” – “have strength for”
- The New Testament was originally written in Greek, and there are several different words for “can” in Greek
- How words work in translation…
- It’s very easy now that we have computers to look at how this particular “can” is used
- This type of “can do” or “could” occurs 29 times in the New Testament, and I’ll give you some examples:
- This is going to be really critical in understanding it
“Can do” = “have capability/strength”
- Mark 9:17–18 Boy was having seizures, the disciples tried to help but “could not”
- Luke 8:43 A woman who had spent everything on doctors for 12 years. She could not be healed by anyone.
- John 21:6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now could not haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.
- James 5:16 ...pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has strength.
- Acts 19:20 (Ephesus) In this way the word of the Lord continued to grow in power and have strength.
- So some of these are supernatural “can do’s” and some are physical “can do’s”, but they are not just about surviving
- Some of them are very active
- So when Paul says “I can do all things” he doesn’t just mean surviving when he has little
- e.g. Revival in Ephesus ↑ Acts 19:20
- So this is the same “can” as Paul says “I can do”
3. The Power

John 14
- Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?
The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own initiative, but the Father residing in me performs his miraculous deeds…
- I tell you the truth,
the person who believes in me will perform the miraculous deeds that I am doing,
and will perform greater deeds than these, because I am going to the Father…
- You will know at that time that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you.
- It’s not about our agenda powered by his energy, It’s about his agenda.
- As we mature as a Christian, and become more renewed by the Spirit, our desires will naturally align with God’s
- We’ll be able to see things more and more from his perspective
- And our agenda will align more with his
